I Wore Black Today

I Wear Black on 9/11

I did not lose any relatives or friends on that horrific day. I did not know anyone personally who looked
9/11 Victims upon this world for the last time that day.  But for the past seven years I have heard their stories, seen their pictures, and heard their names. Now they are all, 2974 of them, my heroes and loved ones.

On the day I lost my friends, I watched in awe their heroic acts. When the nation was asked to attend their houses of worship the next day at noon to pray and show support for the victims of 9/11, I cried so hard that the community assumed I had lost someone in the attacks. Yes, I had lost heroes who had been there all my life, but I did not appreciate the bond between us. Now they are gone and one thing I can do to respect their memories, families, and life is to wear black on the day their life was cut short. I have done and will continue to participate in programs to keep my friends' memories alive. For today, 9/11/2008, and for many 9/11s to come I will wear black.

We all live next to each other in a neighborhood, town, county, state, but all under the same flag. None of us knows what the future holds. As a nation we need to appreciate each other and bury all of our differences. We are all what each other have.

Camarillo's Parent Project Workshop

Camarillo Free Parenting Workshop

As I sat through the 2008-2009 Monte Vista Middle School orientation this summer with two hundred-something other parents, some of us realized that the reality we have been dreading all summer long was finally here. Our elementary school children are about to enter a much larger school and carry the label "preteen" no matter how hard we try to keep them close to the nest.

For years I have listened to parents talk about their unruly, defiant, out-of-control teenagers and preteens. The troubling and heartbreaking stories are the ones when the children are involved in drugs and alcohol abuse. I have watched families break up, and younger siblings suffer. No parent dreams such a life for their child.

Through the Monte Vista Middle School's orientation I became familiar with Camarillo Parent Project, a ten week FREE workshop to help parents with children who demonstrate destructive behavior. Parent Project is an award winning program that offers parents the necessary tools to help identify and stop such negative conduct before it begins.

The Camarillo Parent Project workshop course content:

1) How to love your children when you have a hard time liking them.

2) Why traditional parenting interventions fail.

3) What interventions work and why.

4) How to NEVER argue with your child again.

5) How to get increased compliance with poor house rules.

6) What to do about drugs, sex, gangs, poor grades, running away, and violence.

7)  How to use other parents support.    (Source: Parent Project Flyer)

Schedule of classes:
September 3-November 5, 2008
When: Wednesday nights from 6:00pm-9:00pm
Location: Camarillo Police Station. 3701 Las Posas Road.
For more information please call Senior Deputy Julie Novak: (805)388-5131 OR Julie.novak@ventura.org

Camarillo's Home Improvment Stores

Home Improvment Stores in Camarillo

So you just bought a home in Camarillo, congratulations and may you build many happy memories in your new HOME.

Being a home owner has its sweet and bitter moments. Nonetheless it is true what they say: there is no place like home, and you would probably do almost anything to protect and restore your home.

As you are in the process of becoming a home owner you may hear from other home owners that for the next few months home repair stores are going to be your second home! You may even receive a few gift cards as a house warming gift from these types of stores.

In Camarillo there are a few home improvement stores available for most of your home projects:

B & B Do it Center

Camarillo's Do it CenterLocated at 698 Mobile Ave. and open 7 days a week: Monday-Friday 6:30am-9:00pm Saturday 7:00am-9:00pm Sunday 7:30am-8:00pm

If you are looking for a small store, a quick place to get in and get out, or if you need a common tool for your home project, B & B Do it Center is the place you probably want to check out first.  B & B prices are higher than the warehouse stores, but the excellent service and mid-town convenience, and very helpful staff more than make up for that.

This store specializes in electrical supplies, hardware, lawn and garden.

It is better to call in advance to ask the Center’s friendly staff if they have what you need on stock. (805) 388-1067.

Camarillo Plumbing & PaintCamarillo Plumbing & Paint

Located at 2401 E. Ventura Blvd and open 6 days a week: Monday-Friday 7:15am-5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm

Camarillo Plumbing & Paint has been in business since 1961 and relies heavily on the great reputation they have built around Camarillo.

I have had one interaction with this company through a client and was particularly impressed with their professionalism and punctuality.

The store specializes in heating and air conditioning, plumbing supplies, and paint supplies.

For more information you may want to call: (805) 482-8963.

One last thing, don’t forget to visit the store during Halloween for an awesome haunted house tour.

Harbor Freight Tools

Camarillo Harbor FreightLocated at 3491 Mission Oaks Blvd and open 7 days a week: Monday-Friday 8:00am-7:00pm Saturday: 8:30am-6:00pm Sunday 9:00am-5:00pm.

This is my husband’s and my inventor son’s store when looking for tools that they need to develop new skills. Before investing hundreds or thousands of dollars on the brand name tool, harbor freight’s models allow for fairly inexpensive exploration into new tool types.  They do have professional-grade tools as well, but having a big range of prices is convenient. I have been in the store a couple of times and every time was greeted and assisted by the wonderful staff.

Harbor Freight specializes in professional brand name tools, automotives, and air tools.

The occasional parking lot sales tend to attract tool enthusiasts for all around Ventura County.

For more information about the store’s inventory you can call: (805) 445-4791.

Home Depot in CamarilloCamarillo's Home Depot

Located at 401 W Ventura Blvd. open 7 days a week: Monday-Saturday: 6:00am-10:00pm Sunday: 7:00am-9:00pm.

Contractors, new home owners, home owners with remodeling projects, garden lovers, and tool lovers are the regular shoppers at Home Depot. I have spent hours in our local Home Depot and remember the joy of Camarillo’s residents the day we heard the news that our city was to have its own store.

For more information about the store and class please call: (805) 389-9918.

Relocating to Camarillo, Ventura County

Moving to Camarillo, Ventura County

Relocating to a new State, County, City, or even a new neighborhood within your own town can be difficult and overwhelming for your family. There are many books, movies, and other activities that your whole family can share to reduce the pain of your big move. However, when the big day arrives, no matter how prepared emotionally, financially, or strategically you feel you are, there still seems to be a huge degree of uncertainly in your plans.the world

My parents were not in the military, but my life has moved me around the world quite a bit.  I have lived on three continents by no choice of my own. I have learned to adjust to different environments and learn the local laws of the land as quickly as I could read the language they spoke in that land.

I realized from an early age that saying goodbye to friends and family is not forever. There are ties stronger than land that bind us together, namely, Love.

It was on my last journey that I fell in love with a young man from Southern California and was introduced to the place he called HOME, Ventura County. I have adopted his Home as my own Home now.

surf at ventura beaches

As I learned more and more about Ventura County I fell in love with its beauty and history. I fell in love with the people and the culture of Ventura County. And of course I fell in love with the geography and the proximity of Ventura County to so many of the greatest places in Southern California. Within Ventura County, Camarillo is now my Home.

I have lived in Camarillo for the past 16 years and have seen the city go through some great changes. Camarillo is where I have decided to raise my children.

I know how being new to a city feels. Just be patient and give it some time. I know you can fall in love with Ventura County just as I did.  And if you are considering this wonderful place as your home, consider this Ventura County expert at your service.

The best things are even better when shared.
